Mannam
Mannam is a student led organization for those who are interested in learning about Korea. Our objective is to promote cultural understanding and cross regional networking with other members of the IR/PS community, while enhancing academic and professional interests in all aspects of Korea, including politics, economy, language, and society.
In pursuing this goal, Mannam:
-
Bridges visiting scholars, Global Leadership Institute fellows and MPIA students and creates an interactive network within the IR/PS community at UC San Diego.
-
Hosts academic seminars on current issues surrounding the Korean peninsula.
-
Continues and expands on previous cultural events and other social activities.
-
Connects with the Korean American Association as well as the Korea-related business community in San Diego.
We work closely with faculty members Stephan Haggard and Jong-Sung You and professionals from Korea to invite speakers who are experts in issues related to Korea. Our past speakers include Dr. Ha-sung Jang, Dean of Korea University Business School and corporate governance expert; Thomas C. Hubbard, former U.S. Ambassador to Korea; Marcus Noland, Senior Fellow of the Institute for International Economics; and Ambassador Han Sung Joo, Korea's ambassador to the United States. Also, our social activities include trips to local Korean restaurants, quarterly Korean movie nights, converting lecture halls into Norebang (Karaoke), and our annual soccer game with the Japan focus group, Asameshikai.
With increasing interest in Korea, our membership and activities have been growing steadily. One of our future goals is to create an innovative networking system between the students and the IR/PS alumni. Currently, Mannam starts the Mentoring Program for the incoming students to help their transition to IR/PS easier.
