Visiting Scholars Program
IR/PS welcomes visits by scholars from around the world to interact with IR/PS faculty, access rich resources for research, and participate in UC San Diego events. Visiting scholars from other universities, institutes, and agencies enrich the intellectual community at IR/PS, and develop professional relationships with the school that continue long beyond their time in residence. IR/PS is proud of the distinctive history of the visiting scholars programs and the contributions of our past and current visiting scholars from all of the Pacific regions.
Visiting Scholar Selection & Acceptance Process
Potential visiting scholars must submit a complete application annually by January 1st for appointments that commence the following academic year. Applications will be reviewed by the Visiting Scholars Selection Committee in January and February, and the selected applicants will be notified by March. The committee will award an appointment based upon the merit of the application and availability of office space only after the applicant has secured an IR/PS faculty sponsor.
Only complete applications received by January 1 will be accepted for review by the committee for the following academic year beginning July 1st and ending June 30th. Late applications will be assigned a lower priority, and will be considered only in the event that available spaces have not already been assigned to other applicants.
The visiting scholar is required to have a faculty sponsor. You must secure this faculty sponsor before submitting your application. Without a faculty sponsor, your application will not be complete and will not be considered by the committee. The process of obtaining a faculty sponsor typically involves several rounds of communication by telephone, fax, and/or email between you and the IR/PS faculty member.
The faculty sponsor must be a member of the IR/PS faculty.
It is the responsibility of the visiting scholar to identify, contact, and secure evidence (i.e. email, fax, or written letter) that the faculty member has agreed to serve as a sponsor. This evidence must indicate the period of time he/she is willing to serve as the faculty sponsor and must contain an original or electronic signature. Example of a qualifying statement: “I, Professor (first name, last name), agree to serve as the faculty sponsor for (first name, last name) for the period of (month day, year) – (month, day, year)”.
The faculty member's agreement to serve as a sponsor does not imply financial responsibility.
Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or M.D.)
The visiting scholar should have been awarded a doctoral degree before the commencement of the visiting scholarship. Exceptions may be granted for visitors from industry. Explanation in the application is required.
Curriculum Vitae & Research Proposal
The CV and research proposal must be submitted in order for your application to be complete. These materials will be reviewed by the committee and used to determine the merit of your application.
The IR/PS program does not offer financial assistance to visiting scholars. All visiting scholars will be required to identify financial support during their stay.
