Applying to the Ph.D. Program



The Joint Ph.D. program is small and extremely selective. Preference is given to students with prior academic records of distinction and to those who have a background in one of the fields of emphasis.

Application deadline for 2010 is December 10, 2009.

All application materials must be received in our office by December 10.

Required UC San Diego Graduate Application for Admission - paper applications are no longer available

Supplemental application materials may also be submitted through this application.

 Résumé/Curriculum Vitae

Upload to the online application or mail to IR/PS Admissions.

Official transcript
from each college-level institution attended

Must be submitted directly from each issuing university

Required to be in an unopened envelope sealed by the university's registrar

Personal Statement

To be uploaded to the online application or mailed to IR/PS Admissions

 Standardized Tests

TOEFL Exam Required of International applicants only

Three Letters of Recommendation

Those making the recommendations submit directly to the online application or mail to IR/PS Admissions in a sealed envelope signed across the flap by the recommender.

Admissions Interview

Invitations to participate in Admissions interviews are sent after essays, resume, the completed online application, and application fees are received.

Interviews may be conducted in conjunction with recruiting and outreach events (view event schedule), by telephone, or by Skype.

Application Fee Fee of $70 U.S. citizens, $90 International applicants is required to complete the online application. Fee is non-refundable and payable by major credit card.

Fee waivers are available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with certain income levels. More information at the Office of Graduate Studies.
