Financial Aid

Financial Aid: Financial aid is funding provided by the federal and state governments and by the University of California to assist students with their educational expenses. The UC San Diego Financial Aid web site, fao.ucsd.edu, is filled with helpful information from step-by-step application processes to downloadable forms and specifically addresses the needs of “Grad/professional students” as well as “Veterans and their families,” including the Post-9/11 GI Bill (effective August 1, 2009).

Need-Based Financial Aid: All students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are encouraged to apply for need-based financial aid by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Priority is given to those who file their FAFSA by the deadline of March 2nd each year. You can complete and submit your FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov. UC San Diego’s school code is 001317. Once your FAFSA data has been processed and electronically transferred to the UC San Diego Financial Aid Office by the FAFSA Central Processor, you will be notified of your eligibility by the UC San Diego Financial Aid Office (FAO).

Federal Stafford and PLUS Loan Programs (Refer to: edfund.org (click-on “Students & Families” then “Paying for College”) for additional information.)

  • Subsidized Loans are based solely on financial need. The federal government pays the interest while in school and during the six-month grace period after graduation, leave the school or enroll less than half time. No loan payments are required until the grace period ends.

  • Unsubsidized Loans are eligible for all students, regardless of income or assets. Students are responsible for paying all the interest on the loan but can defer interest payments while in school at least half time. If defered, the interest will be capitalized – added to the initial amount you borrowed – when repayment begins. Future interest costs will be based on the higher loan amount.

  • PLUS Loans (Grad PLUS) are not based on income or assets. Graduate or professional students can borrow up to the total cost of their education, less any other aid they may receive, including any federal Stafford loans.
