BA/MIA Application Requirements

Required UC San Diego Graduate Application for Admission - paper applications are no longer available

Supplemental application materials may also be submitted through this application.

 Résumé/Curriculum Vitae

Upload to the online application or mail to IR/PS Admissions.

Official transcript
from each college-level institution attended

Must be submitted directly from each issuing university

Required to be in an unopened envelope sealed by the university's registrar

Essays

2 required and one optional Essay to be uploaded to the online application or mailed to IR/PS Admissions

 Standardized Tests

 Official GRE OR GMAT test scores required

Three Letters of Recommendation

Those making the recommendations submit directly to the online application or mail to IR/PS Admissions in a sealed envelope signed across the flap by the recommender.

Admissions Interview

Invitations to participate in Admissions interviews are sent after essays, resume, the completed online application, and application fees are received.

Interviews may be conducted in conjunction with recruiting and outreach events (view event schedule), by telephone, or by Skype.

Application Fee Fee of $70 U.S. citizens, $90 International applicants is required to complete the online application. Fee is non-refundable and payable by major credit card.

Fee waivers are available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with certain income levels. More information at the Office of Graduate Studies.

Essays


First Essay: Statement of Purpose

• Your professional objectives in international affairs and/or research interests

• How your background has prepared you to pursue these objectives

Second Essay Topic

"Consider your three most significant strengths OR three most significant weaknesses and describe the impact graduating from IR/PS will have on those characteristics." (Please do not mix strengths and weaknesses)

Optional Statement/Supplemental Essay

This is an opportunity for you to adress a matter that is not already addressed elsewhere in your application and that you feel will help the Admissions Committee to understand challenges you have overcome or other circumstances that affected your successes.
