Susan Shirk in Unofficial U.S., N. Korea talks
Informal talks regarding security held at UC San Diego
U.S. and North Korean representatives participated in an informal discussion on Tuesday held at UC San Diego's Great Hall. The talks were unofficial as part of a two-day conference. Officials from several other northeast Asian countries, including China, South Korea, Japan, and Russia, were present. The talks highlighted regional security.
Susan Shirk, founder of the Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD), said the meeting was meant to be "frank but friendly." Shirk is an IR/PS professor and director of the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC). Said Shirk, "Officials are here not representing their governments, but just speaking in a private capacity, speaking their views."
