Visiting Scholars Program
IR/PS welcomes visits by scholars from around the world to interact with IR/PS faculty, access rich resources for research, and participate in UCSD events. Visiting scholars from other universities, institutes, and agencies enrich the intellectual community at IR/PS and develop professional relationships with the school that continue long beyond their time in residence. IR/PS is proud of the distinctive history of the visiting scholars programs, and has invited scholars from all regions of the Pacific Rim, and the contributions of our past and current visiting scholars.
Visiting Scholar Selection & Acceptance Process
Potential visiting scholars must submit a complete application by January 1st for appointments that commence the following academic year. Applications will be reviewed by the Visiting Scholars Selection Committee in January and February, and the selected applicants will be notified by March. The committee will award an appointment based upon the merit of the application, availability of office space, and only after the applicant has secured an IR/PS faculty sponsor.
Please note that only complete applications will be accepted for review by the committee and that visiting scholars are selected by the committee for appointments that will commence the following academic year.
Visiting Scholar Program 2008-2009
The selection of visiting scholars for the 2007 - 2008 academic year has concluded. We are now accepting applications for visiting scholars for the 2008 - 2009 academic year (July 1, 2008-June 30, 2009). The deadline for application submission is January 1, 2008. Late applications will be assigned a lower priority, and will be considered only in the event that available spaces have not already been assigned to other applicants.
Requirements
Faculty Sponsor
The visiting scholar is required to have a faculty sponsor. You must secure this faculty sponsor before submitting your application. Without a faculty sponsor, your application will not be complete and will not be considered by the committee. The process of obtaining a faculty sponsor typically involves several rounds of communication by telephone, fax, and/or email between you and the IR/PS faculty member.
The faculty sponsor must be a member of the IR/PS faculty.
It is the responsibility of the visiting scholar to identify, contact, and secure evidence (i.e. email, fax, or written letter) that the faculty member has agreed to serve as a sponsor. This evidence must indicate the period of time he/she is willing to serve as the faculty sponsor and must contain an original or electronic signature. Example of a qualifying statement: “I, Professor (first name, last name), agree to serve as the faculty sponsor for (first name, last name) for the period of (month day, year) – (month, day, year)”.
The faculty member's agreement to serve as a sponsor does not imply financial responsibility.
Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or M.D.)
The visiting acholar should have been awarded a doctoral degree before the commencement of the visiting scholarship. Exceptions may be granted for visiting graduate students and visitors from industry. Explanation in the application is required.
Curriculum Vitae & Research Proposal
The CV and research proposal must be submitted in order for your application to be complete. These materials will be reviewed by the committee and used to determine the merit of your application.
Fees
The visiting scholar is required to pay infrastructure and service fees, and total payment must be received by the visiting scholar program coordinator at least one month prior to your arrival. There is a fee of $200 per month for the cost of infrastructure. In addition, the visiting scholar must make a $500 deposit to a “Services Account”, these funds are used to cover the cost of your phone, fax, mail, and copier usage. An accounting of this usage will be made regularly and distributed to you when the account is near deficit. Deficits to the account must be covered immediately. If any monies remain in the services account at the conclusion of the appointment, a check will be issued to you for that remaining amount.
Please note that the program does not offer financial assistance to visiting scholars.
Please note that you will be required to identify how you expect to cover the costs of the office fees and services account deposit (i.e. home institution, grant, fellowship, other).
