AKS-KPP Fellowships

Post-Doctoral and Visiting Scholar Fellowships
on the Political Economy of Korea

With generous support from the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS), the Korea-Pacific Program (KPP) at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) at the University of California, San Diego is pleased to announce two new fellowship opportunities:

The AKS-KPP Visiting Scholar program for tenured faculty and the AKS-KPP Post-Doctoral Fellowship for junior scholars who will complete their PhD degree before July 1 2008 or who currently hold untenured positions.

The fellowships are designed to support research on the political economy of Korea in the postwar period. A crucial requirement of a successful application is evidence of a book project that can be brought toward successful completion during the fellowship period and is likely to result in publication at a university or equivalent press.

The fellowships are open to scholars of all nationalities, and in all of the social sciences including political science, economics, sociology, and anthropology as well as history. The fellowships are open with respect to topic as well; the committee will place primary emphasis on fresh theoretical and empirical contributions. Possible areas of interest include, but are by no means limited to, the following:

-  The political economy of “globalization” and South Korea’s external economic relations

-  The political economy of macroeconomic policy and growth

-  Industrial policy

-  The reform of corporate governance and regulation and business-government relations more generally

-  Social policy, education and training

-  The political economy of the financial sector

-  Sustainability and the politics of environmental policy

-  Economic approaches to the study of politics

The committee is open to comparative work but will look for evidence of an original contribution with respect to the political economy of Korea.

The AKS-KPP Visiting Scholar Program

The AKS-KPP Visiting Scholar program provides support up to $75,000 for tenured faculty completing book manuscripts on the political economy of Korea. Visiting scholars must spend between 3 months (one academic quarter) and one year in residence. The level of support is dependent on the time in residence and the candidate’s other sources of funding, such as sabbatical, as well as research needs. The fellowship is designed primarily to cover travel and living expenses on the assumption that most of the research from the project has been completed. But the committee will entertain proposals for certain research expenses, including additional travel and hiring of a research assistant.

All visiting scholars will be expected to present their work during their stay. If the proposed manuscript is adequately advanced, the KPP will organize a workshop built around the visiting scholar’s work. The KPP will support travel for the workshop if it is held after the fellowship period

Applicants will provide the following materials to the committee:

• A letter of interest containing justification of the overall project. Discuss the research completed to date and outline the feasibility of completing the project in a timely fashion. The letter should also outline the dates of residence and anticipated financial needs (based on a monthly stipend of approximately $5000 plus benefits). If the candidate has other sources of institutional financial support (from other grants or sabbatical funding), these must be outlined.

• A chapter-by-chapter outline of the book project (two pages).

• A curriculum vita

• Two letters of recommendation that comment specifically on the intellectual merits of the project and the feasibility of completing it in a timely fashion.

Deadline for submission of applications is March 15, 2008.

Applications should be mailed to:

The AKS-KPP Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The AKS-KPP Post-Doctoral Fellowship provides support up to $50,000 for junior scholars who will complete their PhD degree before July 1 2008 or who currently hold untenured positions. The fellowship is particularly suited for junior scholars turning dissertations into manuscripts, although the committee will support second projects that are sufficiently advanced that they can be completed within the fellowship period.

Post-doctoral fellows would typically spend nine months (three quarters) or one year in residence. The level of support is dependent on the time in residence and existing funding, for example, from sabbatical. The fellowship is designed primarily to cover travel and living expenses on the assumption that most of the research from the project has been completed. But the committee will entertain proposals for certain research expenses, including additional travel.

Post-doctoral fellows will be expected to present their work at some point during their stay. If the proposed manuscript is adequately advanced, the KPP will organize a workshop built around the fellow’s work. The KPP will support travel for the workshop if it is held after the fellowship period.

Applicants will provide the following materials to the committee:

• A letter of interest. This letter will justify the overall project, discuss the research completed to date, and outline the feasibility of completing the project in a timely fashion. The letter should also outline the dates of residence and anticipated financial needs (based on a monthly stipend of approximately $3750 per month plus fringe benefits). If the candidate has other sources of institutional financial support (from other grants or sabbatical funding), these must be outlined.

• A chapter-by-chapter outline of the book project (two pages)

• A curriculum vita

• Two letters of recommendation that comment specifically on the intellectual merits of the project and the feasibility of completing it in a timely fashion. For doctoral students who have not completed their PhD, the chair of the committee must attest to the fact that the thesis will be completed prior to taking up residence.

Deadline for submission of applications is March 15, 2008.
