Chandler is a noted scholar of political economy, law and public policy, and comparative public policy. The excellence of her work has led to her election as a fellow of the prestigious Royal Society of Canada, the highest academic honor bestowed in that country.
Current Projects
A renowned scholar of political economy and comparative public policy, Chandler is a fellow of the prestigious Royal Society of Canada, the highest academic honor bestowed in that country. She is the author of five books and numerous journal articles and book chapters. Her most recent book, Trade and Transitions, explores how nations adjust to changing patterns of international trade.
In her capacity as senior vice chancellor of academic affairs at the University of California, San Diego, she is the chief academic officer of the university, responsible for policies and decisions relating to all academic programs and curriculum, and faculty appointments and performance. She is also the university’s chief operating officer, the institution’s second-ranking executive officer, and, acts on behalf of the chancellor in overseeing the university in her absence.
Background Notes
At the University of Toronto, Chandler was chair of the political science department and a member of the Faculty of Law. From 1990-1997, she held the position of dean of arts and science. As dean, she directed the academic activities of thirty departments and twelve hundred faculty members, seven colleges, and two campuses. Chandler also served as a visiting professor at Harvard’s Center for International Affairs, and has lectured throughout the world. In June 2003, the University of Toronto awarded her an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Professional Activities
Chandler has received numerous honors and is actively involved in civic affairs. In addition to her membership in the Royal Society of Canada, the University of Toronto awarded her an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2003. She is a member of the board of trustees of Children's Hospital and Health Center; she serves on the board of directors of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, the Fulbright Program (Canada-U.S. Foundation for Educational Exchange), the San Diego Opera, the Foundation for the Children of the Californias, the UCSD Foundation Board and the Charter 100.
