How to Hire a GSR
1. BEFORE OFFERING APPOINTMENT:
Review Student Employment Policies and Confirm Eligibility
The student must:
• possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 and not have more than eight units of F and/or U grades overall.
• be registered full-time (a minimum of 12 units) to be employed a maximum of 50% full-time during the academic year. Students registered for fewer than 12 units are eligible for appointments at 25% full time or less, with department approval.
• not be on leave.
International students:
• cannot be employed for an appointment greater than 50% (of total employment) during the academic year. 100% employment is allowed during the summer if students intend to enroll full-time fall quarter. No exceptions are permitted to this Immigration and Naturalization Service rule.
• A US citizen or permanent resident may be hired for greater than 50% time (total employment) during the academic year if a letter of exception from the Dean of IR/PS and the Dean of Graduate Studies is secured prior to the start of the appointment. Student Affairs will assist the hiring professor and student with obtaining this exception. In general, only requests for an exception up to a maximum of 75% full-time will be considered. Exceptions are made so that a student may accept two differing appointments (e.g., GSR and TA). The Dean of Graduate Studies will not approve a single Graduate Student Researcher position over 50%, nor can exceptions be requested once the quarter has begun.
