December 2006
Susannah McAndrew Chen and Gao-Ya Chen announce the birth of their daughter, Sophie McAndrew Chen. She was born in Hartford, Connecticut on November 23, 2006, Thanksgiving day, coming in at 6 lbs 9 oz and 19.5 inches.
Sophie's Chinese name was given by Gao-Ya's godfather, who was one of the three scholars on the committee to select the name for the daughter of the Japanese crown prince. Sophie's Chinese name is Chen Qing-Xiang (the romanization isn't very helpful, of course - the two characters equate to qing as in pure or clean, xiang as in fragrant, although as a whole it's more meaningful); the Japanese equivalent is Kiyoka.
