Academic Programs
The MPIA Program
The program prepares students with an interest in Pacific Rim countries for positions of leadership in business, government, non-governmental and international organizations, public service, journalism and other fields. Training emphasizes international relations, economics and management, international technology management, policy, environmental issues and development, knowledge of specific countries or regions, analytical and research skills and foreign language.
Ph.D. Program
The Ph.D. in Political Science and International Affairs and the Ph.D. in Economics and International Affairs prepare students for careers in university teaching and research, or as international affairs researchers and specialists in policy analysis. The programs combine the analytical skills of either political science or economics, with political economy, institutional analysis, policy analysis (especially economic policy) and regional training.
Global Leadership Institute*
IR/PS provides advanced training for government officials , corporate executives and non-profit leaders looking to increase their effectiveness in the global arena. Programs are flexible in content and length (3, 6 or 9 months). IR/PS advantages include world-renowned faculty with expertise in the political, managerial, technological and economic issues of Asia and the Americas, exceptional networking opportunities with students and leaders from around the Pacific Rim and a unique interdisciplinary approach to learning. San Diego is also the center of one of America's largest clusters of telecommunications, information technology and biotechnology firms.
Language Program
IR/PS considers foreign language competency an indispensable skill for international relations professionals. The IR/PS Language Program ensures that students achieve a level of competency to aid in their global interactions. IR/PS students fulfill a foreign language requirement in a Pacific Rim language corresponding to a selected region of specialization. The IR/PS Language Program also offers certification of proficiency by examination.
Pac Rim Summer Seminar in U.S. Studies
The Pac Rim Summer Seminar is a four-week program offered in July of each year for scholars and non-academic professionals from Asia and Latin America who want to deepen their understanding of the United States. Taught by distinguished academic experts and non-academic practitioners, the program immerses participants in the analysis of U.S. political and economic history, the conduct of U.S. government at the national and local level, the making of U.S. economic and foreign policy, and U.S. political parties and elections. The program offers a unique opportunity for young professionals from across the Pacific Rim to learn about the United States by exchanging ideas with internationally renown faculty and with each other.
Visiting Scholars Program
IR/PS welcomes visits by scholars from universities, institutes and agencies around the world who would like to interact with its faculty and gain access to its rich resources for research, including its outstanding library on the Pacific region. Visitors enrich the intellectual community at IR/PS and often develop professional relationships with the School that continue long beyond their time in residence. Visitors typically stay for periods ranging from a few months to a full academic year.
