About San Diego

Now the sixth largest city in the United States, San Diego is situated in one of the most livable regions of the country. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and Laguna Mountains and Borrego Desert on the east, San Diego mixes the diverse heritages of Latin America, the Asia-Pacific Region, Europe, and Africa. It offers a rich variety of social and cultural opportunities coupled with widespread recreational activities.

With a strong concentration of academic institutions, San Diego has become an important center for advanced research. It also boasts a diverse economic base, with strong manufacturing, tourism, finance, agriculture, construction and military sectors.

The city hosts a large number of rapidly growing biotech, electronics, international trade and service firms, and has more Ph.D.'s, more personal computers, and more miles of fiber-optic cable per capita than any other American city.

San Diego borders Tijuana, one of Mexico's most dynamic cities. The San Diego/Tijuana area is becoming one of the most important economic centers on the Pacific Rim. San Diego is in a prime location for international businesses involved in the Maquiladora industry, and over 2,000 companies have U.S.-Mexico production-sharing operations.

In recognition of the increasing influence of international business on the economy, San Diego has chartered a World Trade Center, which serves the business community to promote increased trade in the Pacific Rim.
